Sooke Community Denies 21 Year Wastewater Franchise Agreement with EPCOR Water Services
Sooke, BC – June 28, 2011
Through an Alternate Approval Process (AAP), 2,036 electors of the District of Sooke have expressed their opposition to Council proceeding with a proposed 21 year wastewater franchise agreement with EPCOR Water Services. Nine hundred and seventy-five response forms, 10% of electors, were required for this AAP.
“This is the democratic process at work” said Mayor Janet Evans, “We have heard from the public and Council will now consider options for going forward for the operation of our wastewater system.”
Sooke has contracted with EPCOR Water Services for the operation and maintenance of the District of Sooke sewer system since 2004. The District of Sooke Council proposed to move forward with EPCOR in a comprehensive franchise agreement for the long-term management of the utility. The franchise agreement was subject to approval of the electors.
