Derelict Vessel Removed from Sooke Harbour
Sooke, BC – February 24, 2011
Residents and visitors to Sooke will notice a clean-up effort being undertaken in the Sooke Harbour this week as crews work to remove the Florence Filberg, British Columbia, a vessel abandoned in the harbour in November 2007 and subsequently set on fire by arsonists in 2009.
The District of Sooke is removing the derelict vessel as part of the remedial component of the Fisheries and Oceans Canada approval for a water lease for the public boat launch currently under construction on West Coast Road. Heavy Metal Marine, contractor for the District boat launch project, has been working from its barge on the removal of the Filberg since Monday, February 21, 2011.
“Removing the Filberg is a great benefit to the entire community,” said Mayor Evans. “The removal of derelict vessels protects the sensitive environment and beauty of our coastal waters.”
