Firefighters to the Rescue for Haiti
Sooke, BC – January 18, 2010
The Sooke Firefighters have come to the rescue again – this time for Haiti. On hearing about the disaster in Haiti, the firefighters quickly arranged a hot dog sale on Saturday, January 15th to raise funds for the Haiti relief effort.
Thanks to all the volunteering by the firefighters, District Staff and Council and families – and the generosity of the Sooke Community -- the sale was an overwhelming success. Western Foods donated the hot dogs and the combined two-day total collected by the hot-dog sale was $2,686. Two small children arrived with their parents and donated their entire jar of coins that they had been saving – almost $180. Donations are still being accepted at the municipal office.
“The caring spirit of this community is always amazing,” said Acting Mayor Sheila Beech, “The people of Sooke are always ready to help others in need, in Sooke or around the world!”
On Friday, January 15th, a local businessman, Neil Smith, of HHS Drilling and Blasting volunteered his time and equipment to clear the road after the logging truck accident on Sooke Road. If not for his generosity, the traffic to and from Sooke would have not been able to move until several hours later.
Other volunteers are working hard on the Ozone – BCStreets project which will showcase Sooke to the world. Once again, we can proudly say that Sooke is the Volunteer Capital of Canada. Be sure to attend the Volunteer Recognition awards on March 7th, 2010 at the Sooke Community Hall!
