Green Safety Upgrades for Sooke Town Centre Intersections

Sooke, BC – October 18, 2011

On behalf of Council, Mayor Evans is pleased to announce that the agreement with the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia for the intersection improvements at Highway 14 (Sooke Road) with Townsend Road and the future Waterview Street has been signed and design work is underway. As a part of their 2011 Road Improvement Program to reduce motor vehicle crashes and reduce claim costs, ICBC will contribute $50,000 towards the construction of the intersection upgrades at Townsend Road and the roundabout at the proposed Waterview Street.

The new Waterview Street intersection is also funded through the Gas Tax Fund. The Gas Tax Fund delivers infrastructure funding to local governments and other eligible recipients primarily for capital projects that lead to cleaner air, cleaner water or reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The Union of British Columbia Municipalities administers the Gas Tax Fund in British Columbia in collaboration with Canada and British Columbia.

“The Highway 14 intersection upgrades will promote the use of green transportation in Sooke,” says Mayor Janet Evans. “The ICBC and Gas Tax Fund will contribute to Sooke’s on-going efforts of developing a sustainable community while reducing the community’s greenhouse gas emissions.”

The conceptual design for the roundabout is underway and further discussions with adjoining land owners will be required in order to finalize the design prior to proceeding to tender. Construction is anticipated to start early in 2012. A request for quotes will be issued this week in order for the construction of the upgrades at Townsend Road to be completed this year to change it to a right in/right out only intersection. For more information, contact:
