District of Sooke Adopts First Town Centre Plan

At the June 9th, 2009 meeting, District of Sooke Council adopted its first Town Centre Plan.

The process of creating the Town Centre Plan began in early 2008.  Led by Dennis Carlsen Consulting the plan has also included input, research, and design by D’Ambrosio Architecture and Urbanism, Don Roughley, and Boulevard Transportation Group.  Residents, downtown landowners, other project consultants, Official Community Plan Review Committee and Council have also been consulted several times in the plan development process.

“The results of the consultation for the Town Centre Plan revealed that residents desired a more beautiful and vibrant downtown that allowed for a mix of uses and a strong connection to the waterfront.” Said Mayor Janet Evans, “I am very pleased that we now have a Town Centre Plan that will provide a clear  vision and direction for the development of our new town centre.”

The primary goals of which are to establish a Sooke Town Centre that will:

1.         Be a well defined, compact, mixed-use “village core”
2.         Provide a strong “heart” for the community
3.         Reflect Sooke’s distinct cultural heritage
4.         Reinforce its unique geographic location and spectacular natural setting

Copies of the Town Centre Plan are available at the Municipal Hall and on the District of Sooke website:
