Sooke offers access to a variety of trails ranging from gentle seaside strolls to more demanding backcountry routes. Conditions can be rugged, and weather may change quickly—please plan accordingly.

Whether you’re looking for short walks or day-long treks, Sooke’s trail systems connect you to forests, coastline, and stunning viewpoints.

Sooke Marine Boardwalk

Stroll along this scenic waterfront boardwalk to enjoy harbour views, interpretive signs, and opportunities to spot seals, eagles, and other wildlife. It’s easily accessible from the town centre and a great way to experience Sooke’s coastal character.

Whiffin Spit

A favourite local walking spot, Whiffin Spit offers a long, sheltered shoreline pathway with panoramic views of Sooke Harbour, the Salish Sea, and marine wildlife. This easy, level walk is perfect for families, dog walkers, and anyone looking for a peaceful seaside experience.

Ella Beach

Located just minutes from the town centre, Ella Beach provides a quieter, more rugged beach environment where visitors can enjoy tide pools, beachcombing, and coastal views. Conditions can vary with tides and weather, so be mindful of changing shorelines.

After exploring Sooke’s waterfront experiences and discovering its homegrown businesses, continue west along Highway 14 for iconic west coast beaches and surf spots:

  • French Beach Provincial Park – Sandy shores ideal for picnics, beachcombing, and storm watching. A family-friendly stop with facilities and sweeping ocean views.
  • Jordan River – A popular surf destination known for its laid-back vibe, powerful waves, and spectacular scenery.

Kayaking, Paddling & Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)

Calm harbour waters and rugged coastline offer diverse paddling experiences. Local outfitters provide rentals, lessons, and guided tours. Wildlife sightings may include seals, otters, eagles, and occasionally whales.

Fishing & Boating

Recognized as one of Vancouver Island’s premier saltwater fishing regions:

  • Public boat launch at Sooke Harbour

  • Tidal water fishing license required

Visitors can enjoy everything from casual rides to challenging climbs:

  • Cruise the Galloping Goose Trail, a smooth multi-use route between Sooke and Victoria.
  • Seek out mountain biking terrain in the Sooke Hills region, including the Sea to Sea Regional Park

Sooke’s wildlife is abundant—but should always be observed safely and respectfully. Visitors may encounter:
