Bylaws

Bylaws are the local rules that help keep our community safe, fair, and enjoyable for everyone. They are decisions made by Council that reflect Sooke’s values and priorities - helping to guide how we share space together.

Bylaws supplement provincial and federal regulations, such as the BC Building Code, the Motor Vehicle Act, and the Community Charter, to respond to Sooke’s unique local context. This means bylaws can address community-specific needs.

When we work together to follow these rules, we help ensure our neighbourhoods remain welcoming, our roads and parks stay safe, and our natural spaces are protected for generations to come.

Reporting Bylaw Concerns

The District’s Bylaw Services team works with residents to maintain safety, accessibility, and good neighbour relationships throughout Sooke.

If you have a concern, such as noise, parking or property maintenance, please let us know by using the online Bylaw Reporting Form. Using this form, helps ensure a record of your concern is captured in a timely fashion, and provides you with the opportunity to supply our team with supporting images to more quickly respond.

Our approach focuses on education first - helping residents understand the rules and find solutions together. Enforcement action is generally a last resort, used only when voluntary compliance cannot be achieved.

Browse and Search Bylaws

Use our online library to find bylaws:

  • Search by keyword: Type words like “parking,” “fees,” “noise,” or “zoning.”
  • Search by bylaw title: Try “Council Procedure Bylaw” or “Development Procedures Bylaw.”
  • Search by bylaw number: Enter the number (e.g., “Bylaw 889” or just “889”).

Tip: If you see several results, open the one marked “Consolidated” for the most current version. “Amendment” bylaws show changes over time.

Note: This page is provided for convenience and general information only. In the event of a discrepancy, the official signed bylaw and amendments maintained by the District of Sooke prevail.
