We’re working to grow responsibly and protect the environment. This includes strengthening our relationship with the T’Sou-ke Nation and planning for new schools to serve Sooke’s growing population.
Council Advocacy
The District of Sooke delivers important local services like fire protection, policing (through the RCMP), parks, and road maintenance. Many other services that people depend on - like healthcare, education, and social services - are managed by the provincial or federal governments.
In British Columbia, the Province is responsible for things like healthcare, schools, major roads (including Highway 14), and social services. The federal government oversees criminal law, postal services, and employment insurance.
While these areas are outside of local government’s direct control, Sooke’s Mayor and Council actively speak up to ensure our community’s needs and priorities are heard. Council regularly works with provincial and federal representatives to advocate on your behalf.
Council Leadership in Advocacy
Council’s advocacy efforts are guided by the District of Sooke’s Strategic Plan. This plan focuses on protecting our identity, planning for future growth, and building a strong, diverse local economy.
Advocacy is one way Council turns this plan into action—by working with other levels of government to bring resources, services, and support to Sooke.
Advocacy Priorities
Council’s top advocacy priorities are grouped under five key areas from the Strategic Plan. Below are some examples of the issues Sooke Council is championing.
Sustainable Growth and Environmental Stewardship
Community Economic Development
We’re advocating for expanded healthcare, better internet, and support for local businesses. This also includes boosting tourism through new tools like the tourism tax (MRDT) and seeking access to regional funding programs.
Community Safety and Wellbeing
We’re asking for more support for local policing, emergency preparedness, and mental health services. We’re also pushing to be included in regional crime units and to improve traffic safety in busy areas of town.
Infrastructure and Transportation
We’re focused on Highway 14 upgrades, safer streets, and better public transit. This includes plans for a second bridge, more sidewalks and bike lanes, and working with BC Transit to expand local bus service.
Organizational Development and Capacity Building
We’re strengthening how local government works by adopting good governance practices and modernizing how we deliver services. This includes improved technology and greater transparency, accessibility to information.
Advocacy in Action
Council uses a variety of tools to support our advocacy efforts, including:
- Meeting with provincial and federal officials to discuss local issues
- Submitting letters and reports to share community priorities
- Participating in regional committees and working groups
- Working with nearby communities to advocate for shared goals
These efforts help ensure decisions that affect Sooke reflect the voices and needs of our residents.
