Flag Notifications

The District of Sooke lowers flags at municipal facilities to mark occasions of national, provincial, or local significance, in accordance with the District’s Flag Policy.

Flags are lowered to half-mast as a sign of respect and remembrance on designated days throughout the year, and as directed by the Mayor in response to significant local or national events.

Annual Flag Lowering Days

Flags are lowered annually on the following occasions:

  • April 9 – Battle of Vimy Ridge Day
  • April 28 – National Day of Mourning (for workers killed or injured on the job)
  • Second Sunday in September – Firefighters’ National Memorial Day
  • Last Sunday in September – Police and Peace Officers’ National Memorial Day
  • September 30 – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
  • November 8 – Indigenous Veterans Day
  • November 11 – Remembrance Day
  • December 6 – National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Additional Lowering Periods

Flags may also be lowered:

  • Upon the passing of a current or former local official, member of the Canadian Armed Forces, or other person of distinction as directed by the Mayor.
  • To recognize tragic events or national periods of mourning, in accordance with federal or provincial direction.
