The District of Sooke is committed to openness, transparency, and the protection of personal privacy.

We collect, use, and disclose information in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). This legislation ensures that the public has the right to access most records held by the District, while also safeguarding personal information from unauthorized use or disclosure.

Most information about District operations is available online — including Council and Committee meeting documents, bylaws, policies, and financial reports. Before making a formal request, check the District website or contact us to see if the information you need is already publicly available.

If the records you’re looking for are not available online, you can submit a Freedom of Information (FOI) request.

Freedom of Information Requests

Under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), you have the right to request access to most records held by the District of Sooke. The Act also ensures that personal information is protected from unauthorized collection, use, or disclosure.

To submit a Freedom of Information (FOI) request under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), please complete the FOI REQUEST FORM.

Requests are processed within 30 business days, as required under FIPPA. Some may take longer if additional time is needed to locate records or consult with third parties. If more time is needed to locate records or consult with third parties, you will be notified in writing before the initial 30-day period expires.

Under FIPPA, fees may be charged to cover the cost of locating, retrieving, and preparing records. You will be notified of any fees in advance and may be asked to pay a deposit.

Personal information is collected by the District under the authority of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) and is used only for the purpose of delivering District programs and services. This includes responding to requests, processing applications, issuing permits, and communicating with residents.
