Check the Ventilation Index Before You Burn

While backyard burning is permitted in Sooke from November 1 to April 30, it is only allowed when ventilation conditions are GOOD. The ventilation index, published daily by the Province of BC, helps determine whether smoke can properly disperse into the atmosphere.  Before lighting any fire, always check the index. Burning during poor ventilation traps smoke close to the ground, affecting neighbours and reducing local air quality.

Safe Backyard Burning Tips

  • Check the ventilation index — burning is only permitted when conditions are rated “good.”
  • Burn only clean, dry materials — yard debris such as branches and garden waste. Never burn garbage, plastics, or construction materials.
  • Maintain safe distances — keep your fire at least 10 metres from buildings, property lines, trees, or other combustible materials.
  • Never leave a fire unattended — always have water and tools on hand to control the burn.
  • Fully extinguish fires before leaving the area.
  • Be considerate of neighbours — smoke can travel; avoid burning on windy days.

Burning responsibly protects everyone’s health. Poor air quality can aggravate respiratory conditions and impact vulnerable residents. By checking the ventilation index and following safety practices, residents can help maintain clean air and a safer community.
