Building a community where everyone belongs

Accessibility & Inclusion

The District of Sooke is committed to creating an inclusive community that is safe, welcoming, and accessible for all residents and visitors. Accessibility means ensuring people of all abilities can participate fully in community life. Inclusion means celebrating diversity and recognizing that everyone’s contributions make Sooke stronger.

Our Commitment

The District’s approach to accessibility is guided by the Accessible British Columbia Act, provincial legislation that aims to identify, remove, and prevent barriers to accessibility in the built environment, information and communication, transportation, employment, and service delivery.

We recognize that there is still a lot of work to do to make Sooke more accessible and inclusive. Progress takes time, and resources are limited, but we are committed to moving forward. By working collaboratively with residents, organizations, and community partners, we can identify barriers, prioritize improvements, and find practical solutions together.

Accessibility in Sooke

  • Municipal Facilities: Many District facilities include accessible entrances, washrooms, and parking spaces. Future upgrades are designed with accessibility in mind.
  • Parks and Trails: Accessible paths, benches, and play features are being added as part of the Parks and Trails Master Plan.
  • Transportation: Sidewalks, curb cuts, and crosswalk improvements help reduce travel barriers through our community.
  • Communication: District information is published in accessible formats online, with plain-language approaches to help everyone stay informed.

Inclusion in Sooke

  • Respect for Diversity: We value and celebrate differences across ability, age, culture, language, gender identity, and more.
  • Partnerships: We work alongside organizations to support inclusive programs and events.
  • Compassionate Community: As part of the global Compassionate Communities movement, we encourage kindness, dignity, and social connection in daily life.

Moving Forward Together

Accessibility is a journey. While not every barrier can be removed immediately, we are committed to steady progress. We will continue to listen, learn, and act where we can - guided by community input, available resources, and long-term planning.
