Supporting One Another, Together.
Compassionate Community
The District of Sooke is a proud participant in the global Compassionate Communities movement - a growing network of municipalities working to foster kindness, dignity, and social connection in daily life. In Sooke, compassion is more than a value - it’s how we live, care, and grow as a community.
What is a Compassionate Community?
A Compassionate Community is a place where residents, local government, schools, businesses, and community groups come together to support one another - especially during life’s most difficult times. This includes:
- Fostering inclusion and connection across generations
- Promoting equitable access to services and resources
- Building community resilience through local leadership and participation
- Supporting individuals experiencing illness, caregiving, or grief
Compassionate communities recognize that health and wellbeing are shared responsibilities - and that small acts of care make a big difference.
Sooke’s Commitment
Sooke’s journey as a Compassionate Community focuses on strengthening social connections, supporting caregiving and grief, and encouraging conversations about wellbeing and preparedness. We are also growing resilience through community-based emergency planning and neighbourhood networks that help residents care for one another before, during, and after a crisis.
How You Can Get Involved
Everyone has a role in creating a compassionate and prepared community. You can:
- Reach out to a neighbour or friend in need
- Participate in a compassion-focused or emergency preparedness event
- Create a neighbourhood emergency plan or join a local support network
- Explore local groups offering volunteer and support opportunities
Let’s continue to grow a Sooke where compassion and readiness are part of daily life - reflected in our programs, relationships, and how we show up for one another.
