Honouring Place. Strengthening Relationships.
First Nations & Indigenous Relations
The District of Sooke is located on the traditional territory of the Coast Salish Peoples who have lived on these lands since time immemorial. We gratefully acknowledge the T’Sou-ke and Sc’ianew Nations and their enduring relationship with the land, waters, and all beings.
We honour the deep knowledge systems, cultural teachings, and enduring stewardship of Indigenous Peoples. With humility, we commit to learning, listening, and working in partnership – respecting the wisdom that comes from the land and from generations of lived experience.
Our Commitment
The District of Sooke is dedicated to:
- Respecting Indigenous rights and title as affirmed in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
- Building partnerships with the T’Sou-ke and Sc’ianew Nations and Indigenous communities across the region.
- Supporting community learning and cultural revitalization through inclusive events, storytelling, and collaboration.
- Working together on shared goals, such as climate action, environmental stewardship, emergency preparedness, and economic opportunity.
Ways to Learn and Engage
Reconciliation is a shared journey. Here are a few ways you can get involved:
- Attend local cultural events or workshops hosted in partnership with Indigenous knowledge holders.
- Learn about Coast Salish traditions.
- Review the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and consider how they can be put into action locally.
Respecting Place. Growing Together.
Let us move forward in a good way - learning from the past, acting in the present, and walking together into the future.
