District of Sooke Celebrates New Public Art Installation at Ravens Ridge Park
The District of Sooke is pleased to announce the installation of a new public artwork at Ravens Ridge Park, further advancing the community’s commitment to meaningful public art that reflects local landscape, culture, and collaboration. The name Ravens Ridge Park was selected with support from the T’Sou-ke Nation to connect with the origins of the land and to recognize the raven, a bird frequently seen flying over the park and deeply rooted in local presence and symbolism.
The installation, titled SQTO (Raven in Senćoŧen), was created by artist Shelley Davies and draws directly from the name of Ravens Ridge Park. The composition features a central raven grounded in the landscape, with a second raven soaring overhead, reinforcing themes of movement, perspective, and connection. The ravens are complemented by imagery of a mother bear and cub, speaking to care, protection, and the gathering of families within this shared community space. Stikas, silhouetted trees, and a bold sunset backdrop reflect the surrounding west coast landscape and anchor the artwork within its natural setting.
“The raven is a symbol of transformation, intelligence, and guidance,” said artist Shelley Davies. “By including two ravens and the mother and cub, I wanted to reflect both movement and togetherness - how this space supports play, gathering, and connection for families and the wider community. It’s been an honour to collaborate on a piece that feels so rooted in place.”
Mayor Maja Tait highlighted the role of public art in strengthening community spaces. “SQTO is a powerful example of how public art can reflect who we are and how we come together,” said Mayor Tait. “This installation recognizes the importance of Ravens Ridge Park as a place for families, recreation, and connection, and showcases the talent and collaboration behind its creation.”
Public art initiatives in the District of Sooke are supported through the Sooke Public Art (SPA) Reserve Fund, which is funded by three per cent of building permit user fees collected annually. This approach ensures continued investment in cultural projects that enhance public spaces and community life.
Ravens Ridge Park, located at 2430 Phillips Road, is a welcoming, multi-use destination featuring a multi-use sports box and multi-use games area, public washrooms, a water fountain, bike racks, new trails providing neighbourhood access, and parking for approximately 40 vehicles. The park’s original development was supported through a grant-funded project, including an $892,778 Canada Infrastructure Community, Culture and Recreation Program grant from the Province of British Columbia and a $400,000 contribution from the District of Sooke’s Amenity Reserve Fund, established with a contribution from Sunriver Estates, and represents a joint effort between the District of Sooke and the Capital Regional District Sooke and Electoral Area Parks and Recreation Commission (SEAPARC).
Residents and visitors are invited to visit Ravens Ridge Park to experience SQTO and enjoy the many recreational, cultural, and gathering spaces the park provides.
