District of Sooke Prepares for Rainy Season: Self-Serve Sandbag Stations Returning at Two Locations

As the rainy season approaches, the District of Sooke is encouraging residents and businesses to take steps now to prepare for heavy rainfall and potential flooding.

Beginning the week of October 19, the District’s free, self-serve sandbag program will return with two locations available to the community:

  • Ed Macgregor Park parking lot, 6765 West Coast Road
  • Sooke Fire Hall #2, 2011 Goodridge Road

Sand and empty bags will be available at both locations. Residents and businesses are asked to bring their own shovel and fill only what they need for their property, helping ensure supplies remain available for others.

The stations will remain available throughout the rainy season, until approximately the end of March or early April.

The self-serve sandbag stations are part of the District’s Emergency Management Program and support year-round efforts to strengthen community readiness, response and recovery.

Preparing before heavy rain arrives can make a meaningful difference. Residents and businesses are encouraged to:

  • Check weather forecasts and watch for heavy rainfall warnings.
  • Monitor catch basins near your home or business and help keep them clear of leaves and debris.
  • Keep ditches, drains and culverts near your property clear so water can flow freely.
  • Direct runoff away from buildings and foundations.
  • Consider whether your property has low-lying or flood-prone areas and take preventative steps early.
  • Stay informed through local updates and emergency notifications.

Using the Sandbag Stations

Sandbags and sand are provided specifically for flood protection. Please bring your own shovel and take only the amount reasonably needed for your property.

When filling sandbags, fill them approximately halfway to two-thirds full so they can be placed and stacked effectively. Bags can be stored for future use once the risk of flooding has passed.

District staff will monitor supplies throughout the season, with additional supplies provided as needed.
