District of Sooke recognizes National Indigenous Peoples Day
The District of Sooke joins communities across Canada in recognizing National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, a day to honour and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, languages and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.
This year, the Sitka-Moon Street Banners by T’Sou-ke Nation artist Shelley Davies will once again adorn streets throughout Sooke. The artwork, already familiar in the community, brings beauty, meaning and reflection to public spaces while holding close our connection to this place and the history of the lands and waters we call home.
The banner design features moons that capture the changing of the seasons and the natural cycles that have long guided life on these lands. As National Indigenous Peoples Day falls near the summer solstice, the artwork offers a timely reminder of light, renewal, continuity and connection.
The design is also being transferred into decals so it can be shared in more places across Sooke, extending the presence of Indigenous art throughout the community and inviting residents and visitors to reflect on the deep relationship between people, place and history.
The District is grateful to Shelley Davies for sharing this meaningful work and acknowledges that Sooke is located on the traditional territories of the T’Sou-ke Nation and Sc’ianew Nation, whose relationships with these lands and waters continue since time immemorial.
Residents are encouraged to take time on June 21 to reflect, learn and celebrate Indigenous cultures, and to continue this learning throughout the year.
