District of Sooke Welcomes New Mayor and Council for 2026–2030 Term

New Council begins four-year term with a focus on community priorities, collaboration and Sooke's future

The District of Sooke officially welcomed Mayor Kevin Pearson and six Councillors at the Inaugural Council Meeting held Monday, November 2, 2026, at Sooke Municipal Hall.

Joining Mayor Pearson for the 2026–2030 term are Councillors Janet Evans, Herb Haldane, Elliot Lifton, Rob Pearce, Curtis Peterec and Katherine Strongwind.

The inaugural meeting marked the beginning of a new Council term, with elected officials taking their oaths of office and Mayor Pearson receiving the ceremonial Chain of Office from outgoing Mayor Maja Tait.

The District extends its sincere thanks to the Harmony Project for providing music for the opening procession, helping make the occasion a memorable and welcoming celebration.

In his inaugural address, Mayor Pearson thanked residents for their confidence and support and spoke about the importance of listening, collaboration and working together to address community priorities.

He highlighted transportation improvements, including the proposed Throup Road Connector, and expanded recreation opportunities as areas of interest for the coming term, recognizing the importance of infrastructure and community amenities as Sooke continues to grow.

In remarks shared ahead of the inaugural meeting, Mayor Pearson emphasized his commitment to inclusive decision-making:

"I want people to feel heard and see themselves reflected in the decisions we make. That starts with listening and working together."

The inaugural meeting also celebrated Sooke's international connections, with Mayor Pearson reading a letter from Mayor Yamata of Natori, Japan, Sooke's Sister City. The letter recognized the relationship between the two communities and the importance of continuing to strengthen these connections.

Following the formal meeting, residents had an opportunity to meet their new elected representatives, share conversations and connect with one another during an informal community gathering.

As the new Council begins its four-year term, the District looks forward to working with residents, local First Nations, community organizations and government partners to support informed decisions, strengthen relationships and advance the community's long-term needs.
