Final Free Yard Waste Drop-Off Day Set for October 31 (2026 Program)
Residents have one final opportunity this year to dispose of yard waste free of charge while helping reduce wildfire risk around their homes and neighbourhoods.
The District of Sooke's final scheduled free yard waste drop-off day for 2026 takes place Saturday, October 31, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the District Yard, 2070 Kaltasin Road.
The service is available to District of Sooke residential property owners and occupants. Accepted materials include leaves, grass clippings, branches, prunings and garden debris. Commercial loads and invasive plant materials cannot be accepted. Residents are asked to unload their own materials and allow extra time during busy periods.
"Small actions can make a big difference in reducing wildfire risk," said Madison Crawford, Sooke FireSmart Program Coordinator. "We appreciate everyone who has participated in the program and taken steps to help make our community more resilient."
Backyard Burning Season Begins November 1
Residents are reminded that backyard burning is permitted from November 1 to April 30, when the Ventilation Index is rated GOOD. Conditions must be checked before lighting a fire.
As alternatives to burning, residents are encouraged to compost, chip, mulch or properly dispose of yard waste. Only dry materials should be burned, and fires must never be left unattended.
Information on burning regulations and the Ventilation Index is available on the Burning Regulations information page of the District's website.
The District thanks residents for their continued support of FireSmart initiatives and acknowledges funding provided through the Union of BC Municipalities and the Province of British Columbia FireSmart program.
