Information Bulletin: Weather Monitoring, Community Preparedness, and Expanded Sandbag Access

The District of Sooke is advising residents that a period of above-average rainfall and potential high winds is forecast. Crews are monitoring conditions and are prepared to respond as required, prioritizing public safety, greatest impact areas, and available resources.

Residents who are unsure whether the District is aware of flooding, drainage concerns, or wind-related hazards in their area are encouraged to submit a service request or call 250-642-1634. Community reporting supports timely response and helps the District identify emerging issues and recurring problem areas.

Safety During Heavy Rain and High Winds

Increased rainfall combined with strong winds can result in rapidly changing conditions, including localized flooding, downed trees, and debris on roadways. Residents are urged to use caution and:

  • Avoid walking or driving near swollen waterways, ditches, or creeks
  • Stay clear of trees, power lines, and wooded areas during high winds
  • Use caution on trails and near roadways where falling branches may occur
  • Please respect all posted closure signs and barriers. While there are no closures in place at this time, this may change as weather conditions evolve.

Sandbag Stations: Expanded Access for Community Preparedness

To support residents in protecting their properties and to strengthen community-wide emergency preparedness, the District has a self-serve sandbag station available 24/7:

  • Ed MacGregor Park parking lot (6752 West Coast Rd)

NEW! A second 24/7 self-serve sandbag station will be setup and available from Dec 19, 2025:

  • Sooke Firehall #2 (2011 Goodridge Road)

The addition of the second sandbag station improves access across the community and supports a shared, proactive approach to flood readiness.

Preparing for Possible Power Outages

High winds may result in power outages. Residents are encouraged to take simple preparedness steps, including:

  • Charging mobile phones and essential medical devices
  • Having flashlights, batteries, and basic emergency supplies readily available
  • Checking in on neighbours who may need additional support
  • If power lines are down, stay well clear and call 911. For more on power outages and electrical safety, see BC Hydro.

Working Together as a Community

Residents can help reduce impacts by:

  • Securing loose outdoor items such as bins, furniture, and decorations
  • Checking gutters, culverts, and drains on their properties to ensure they are clear
  • Supporting neighbours, particularly elders and others who may be more vulnerable or require additional assistance during severe weather or power outages

The District will continue to monitor conditions and respond as weather conditions require and resources allow. A coordinated community approach - residents, emergency services, and District crews working together - helps improve safety, preparedness, and resilience during weather events. Residents are encouraged to learn more about the District’s Emergency Planning and Preparedness Program, including how to prepare for storms and power outages, at sooke.ca/emergencyprep.
