Light Up the Night at Sooke’s Solstice Lantern Walk on December 21
The community is invited to gather for a magical evening at the 2025 Solstice Lantern Walk on Sunday, December 21 at 6:30 p.m. Hosted by Friends of Sooke Parks Society at John Phillips Memorial Park (2201 Otter Point Road), the annual event brings residents together to celebrate the longest night of the year with warmth, light, and connection.
Participants are encouraged to bring a battery-powered lantern and meet outside Sooke Municipal Hall before embarking on a peaceful winter stroll through the park’s enchanting pathways. The event is supported by community partners, including the Sooke Arts Council, Sooke Region Museum, Vancouver Island Regional Library, the District of Sooke and numerous community volunteers.
Event Organizer Helen Ritts says the Solstice Lantern Walk is a creative way to mark the changing season and celebrate community spirit. “The Solstice Lantern Walk is one of those moments where the community comes together simply to share light during the darkest time of year,” says Ritts. “It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, and it reminds us how connected we really are. The event also highlights the important role parks and green spaces play in bringing people together. We welcome everyone to join us for this magical annual tradition.”
The walk is free to attend and suitable for all ages. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly and bring their lanterns to help illuminate the night.
