Mayor Tait Proclaims Heritage Week 2026
Mayor Maja Tait is proud to proclaim February 16–22, 2026, as Heritage Week, recognizing the people, places, and stories that shape the community’s unique identity and contribute to its social, cultural, and economic well-being.
Heritage is the foundation of community identity, connecting residents with shared histories, traditions, and experiences. Through the proclamation of Heritage Week, the District of Sooke reaffirms its commitment to protecting and celebrating its rich and diverse cultural and natural heritage.
Sooke’s heritage contributes to economic activity, job creation, tourism, and overall quality of life, while its heritage places and spaces help foster a sustainable and connected community. The District also acknowledges that all members of the community contribute to this shared heritage and that these cultural and natural resources are irreplaceable sources of inspiration and pride.
“Heritage Week is an opportunity to reflect on the stories and values that bring us together as a community,” said Mayor Maja Tait. “By recognizing and celebrating our heritage, we strengthen our sense of place and support the well-being of current and future generations.”
As part of Heritage Week, residents are encouraged to explore local history, participate in heritage-related activities, and learn more about the people and places that make the Sooke region unique. Information on local events, exhibits, and activities can be found through the Sooke Region Museum and Visitor Information Centre at sookeregionmuseum.ca/.
The District of Sooke supports initiatives that celebrate heritage, recognize cultural contributions, and encourage active community participation, and invites everyone to take part in Heritage Week 2026.
