Mayoral Statement: International Women’s Day

This year, as we mark International Women’s Day, I’m reflecting on the strength of our community while attending Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) Board Week alongside municipal leaders from across Canada.

International Women’s Day exists because, for generations, women have worked to overcome barriers and create space to participate fully in public life. It is a day to recognize those efforts, celebrate the contributions of women and girls, and continue the work of building communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

In Sooke, I see the impact of women’s leadership every day. Women contribute to the life of our community in so many ways — in local businesses, in classrooms, community organizations, volunteer groups, and within our families and neighbourhoods. Through their leadership, collaboration, and care for community, they help shape the place we are proud to call home.

One of the things that makes Sooke so special is the way people show up for one another. The diversity of experiences, cultures, and perspectives in our community strengthens our shared fabric and helps us grow together. Women are an essential part of that story — building connections, contributing ideas, and helping guide our community forward.

International Women’s Day is also a moment to look ahead with hope. I’m inspired by the next generation of girls and young women growing up in communities like ours — curious, capable, and ready to lead in their own ways. My hope is that they continue to see possibilities for themselves everywhere decisions are made and communities are shaped.

From Sooke to communities across Canada, I’m grateful for the many women who continue to lead, serve, and support others. Your contributions help make Sooke the resilient, caring, and vibrant community we are proud to be part of.
