Mayoral Statement: Tumbler Ridge Tragedy
Mayor Maja Tait offers this statement, following the tragic events in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia on February 10, 2026:
On behalf of Council and the District of Sooke, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the community of Tumbler Ridge and to everyone affected by the tragic events of February 10, 2026.
Today, we stand with our neighbours - from the southwest coast here in Sooke to the northeastern reaches of our province - in shared sorrow and solidarity. In moments of profound loss, communities across British Columbia are connected by compassion and care.
Sooke is a community that leads with heart. We hold space for the families and loved ones who are grieving, for first responders, teachers, and support workers, and for all those whose lives have been forever changed.
As a mark of respect and remembrance, flags at District of Sooke municipal hall will be lowered and flown at half-mast effective immediately and will remain so until sunset, February 17, 2026.
During this difficult time, I encourage our residents to keep the people of Tumbler Ridge in their thoughts and to continue showing kindness and care within our own community.
Sincerely,
Mayor Maja Tait
District of Sooke
An online book of condolences is available for signing until end of day on Friday, February 20, 2026.
