Proclamation – May 2026 Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month

The District of Sooke is pleased to proclaim May 1–31, 2026, as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, supporting national efforts to raise awareness about prevention and early detection.

As highlighted in the proclamation, over-exposure to UV radiation is a leading cause of skin cancer, now the most common cancer in Canada. With rates continuing to rise—particularly among younger Canadians—this initiative emphasizes the importance of sun safety, regular skin checks, and early detection, which can significantly improve outcomes.

In partnership with the Save Your Skin Foundation and communities across the country, Sooke is proud to support education and awareness efforts that encourage residents to protect their skin and reduce their risk.
