Rain and wind in the forecast November 5–7: A few ways to prepare and help your neighbours

With periods of increased rainfall and strong winds expected across the South Coast from Thursday, November 5, through Saturday, November 7, the District of Sooke is sharing a few seasonal reminders to help residents prepare and keep our community safe.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a weather advisory for the South Coast, with several weather systems expected over the coming days. Wind gusts of 70–90 km/h are possible across, along with periods of moderate to heavy rainfall.

As with many fall weather systems, fallen leaves and debris can affect drainage, while strong winds may bring down branches or cause localized power outages. Residents are encouraged to stay informed as forecasts are updated and take a few simple precautions where practical.

A little preparation goes a long way

There are several easy ways residents can help prepare their homes and neighbourhoods for wet and windy weather:

  • Help keep catch basins clear: Fallen leaves and debris can block drainage and contribute to localized pooling of water. If safe to do so, consider clearing leaves from catch basins near your home or business. Explore the District's Catch Basin Locator Map to find those closest to you. Please stay out of traffic and never attempt to remove drain covers.
  • Check drainage around your property: Clear leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts and accessible drainage areas to help rainwater flow freely.
  • Secure outdoor items: Take a moment to secure patio furniture, garbage bins and other items that could be moved by the wind.
  • Keep a few essentials handy: Charge devices, locate flashlights and check household emergency supplies.
  • Plan ahead when travelling: Check road and weather conditions before heading out, and allow a little extra travel time.

Residents can report blocked drainage infrastructure, pooling water on public roads or other non-emergency maintenance concerns through the District's online service request system at sooke.ca/request.

Sandbag stations available for residents

For properties that may be prone to pooling water or localized flooding, the District provides free sand and empty sandbags at two self-serve locations:

  • Ed Macgregor Park parking lot - 6765 West Coast Road
  • Sooke Fire Hall #2 - 2011 Goodridge Road

Residents are welcome to access these stations as needed. Please bring your own shovel and take only the supplies you reasonably need, helping keep materials available for others.

Community supporting community

One of Sooke's strengths is the way neighbours look out for one another.

As we head into this stretch of fall weather, consider checking in with a neighbour who might appreciate a helping hand. Whether it's clearing a few leaves from a nearby catch basin, helping someone prepare sandbags or sharing a useful resource, small actions can make a difference.

By working together and taking a few practical steps, we can help keep our neighbourhoods safe and our drainage systems working as intended.

Stay connected to local information

The District also encourages residents to register for Alertable, Sooke's Public Alert Notification System, which provides important local notifications during emergencies.

Residents can choose how they receive notifications, including through the mobile app, text message, email or phone call.

Learn more and register at sooke.ca/alert.
