Trail and Park Notice: Sunriver Nature Trail Closed; Sooke Potholes Gateway Under Monitoring
The District of Sooke is advising residents and visitors of temporary access impacts due to high water levels and ongoing rainfall.
Sunriver Nature Trail is currently closed as sections of the trail are being impacted - or are at risk of being impacted - by flooding. Crews will continue to monitor conditions and will reopen the trail when it is safe to do so.
The Sooke Potholes Gateway remains open at this time. However, with continued rainfall expected for several hours, a delayed opening tomorrow is anticipated to allow staff the necessary time to inspect the site for safety before permitting public access. District staff are closely monitoring water levels and trail conditions and will provide updates as needed.
Safety Around Waterways
With water levels in the Sooke River and surrounding waterways rising more rapidly under current weather conditions, the District urges the public to take extra precautions:
- Keep a safe distance from riverbanks, which may be unstable or prone to sudden sloughing.
- Keep pets leashed and under close supervision near all waterways to prevent accidental slips or being caught in fast-moving water.
- Avoid crossing flooded trails or pathways, as water depth and current strength can be unpredictable.
- Stay away from swiftly moving water, even if it appears shallow.
- Follow all posted signage and respect closures put in place for public safety.
- Report any hazardous conditions to the District if observed.
The District thanks the community for its patience and cooperation as we work to ensure public safety.
