Burning Regulations

Backyard burning is permitted in the District of Sooke from November 1 to April 30, when ventilation is GOOD and conditions are safe. The goal is to protect air quality and prevent unnecessary fire risks while allowing rural property owners to manage yard debris responsibly.

Before you burn, it’s important to know when, where, and what you can burn — and how to do so safely.

Check Conditions Before You Burn

Before lighting a fire, always check the Ventilation Index to ensure conditions are appropriate for burning.

Burning is only permitted when the index is rated “GOOD” for the day.

When ventilation is “Fair” or “Poor,” smoke cannot disperse properly and can negatively impact air quality and community health. To help protect the environment and your neighbours, do not burn when conditions are unfavourable.

All fires must be completely extinguished by sunset each day.

If you have concerns about backyard burning or believe someone is burning outside permitted conditions, please contact Bylaw Services at 250-642-1634 or submit a Bylaw Concern Report.

What You Can Burn

Yes:

  • Yard and garden debris such as branches, leaves, and weeds.
  • Clean, untreated, dry wood.

No:

  • Garbage, plastics, or household waste.
  • Construction materials, painted wood, or furniture.
  • Wet or green vegetation that causes excessive smoke.

Illegal burning can result in fines under the District of Sooke Fire Protection Services Bylaw.

Safe Burning Practices

Keep your fire safe and respectful to your neighbours:

  • Burn in a cleared area at least 10 metres from buildings and 5 metres from property lines.
  • Have a water source and tools (such as a hose, shovel, or extinguisher) ready at all times.
  • Never leave a fire unattended.
  • Avoid burning on windy days or when the ventilation index is poor or fair.
  • Be considerate of neighbours — smoke can affect health and comfort.

If your fire escapes your control, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Alternatives to Burning

Help protect Sooke’s air and environment by choosing cleaner options:

  • Compost yard waste at home.
  • Drop off yard debris through local FireSmart or community clean-up programs (check sooke.ca/events for upcoming dates).
  • Chipping or hauling materials to an approved waste facility.

These alternatives reduce smoke and support community air quality.
