About Our Team

Behind every clean park, maintained trail, and welcoming public space is Sooke’s Parks and Trails team — a small but dedicated group committed to caring for our community’s outdoor spaces.

Working year-round, the team maintains amenities such as benches, picnic tables, playground equipment, and public garbage cans, and manages over 40 kilometres of trails connecting neighbourhoods, parks, and schools.

With modest service levels and a focus on sustainability, the team prioritizes safety, essential maintenance, and environmental care, while encouraging volunteer and community stewardship efforts.

Their work ensures Sooke’s natural spaces remain accessible, safe, and enjoyable for everyone — today and for generations to come.

What We Do

Sooke’s Parks and Trails team works year-round to maintain and enhance the green spaces that make our community unique. From routine maintenance and trail care to planning future parks and supporting environmental stewardship, the team helps keep Sooke’s outdoor spaces safe, accessible, and welcoming for all.

Trail expansion projects support safer walking, cycling, and connections between neighbourhoods, parks, and schools.

Project range from smaller accessibility improvement such as a trail connection at John Phillips Memorial Park from the municipal hall parking lot, installed in 2025 to the Little River Pedestrian Crossing Project, while will fully open in Spring 2026.

During storms, the team responds to issues such as fallen trees, flooding, and erosion in coordination with the District’s Roads and Stormwater and Emergency Management Program crews.

Throughout the growing season, the team performs routine mowing, vegetation management, and brush clearing to maintain safe sightlines, open trails, and healthy park spaces.

Seasonal work also includes FireSmart vegetation management, invasive species removal, and landscaping improvements to maintain the health and beauty of Sooke’s public spaces year-round.

Parks and trail projects are guided by the Parks and Trails Master Plan and Transportation Master Plan, ensuring that investments align with community priorities and sustainability goals.

Ongoing improvements include upgrades to playgrounds, trail networks, and signage for accessibility and wayfinding.

The District integrates environmental care into all park and trail operations.

We maintain natural areas to protect biodiversity, manage vegetation responsibly, and encourage visitors to help keep these spaces clean and resilient for future generations.

Sooke’s parks and trails thrive through community collaboration.

Residents, volunteers, and local organizations contribute through clean-ups, habitat care, and stewardship initiatives.
