Editorial: Ducks, Drama, and Delicious Finds Shape Sooke’s May 9-10, 2026 Weekend Lineup

This weekend in Sooke offers a reminder of something residents already know well: you don’t need to go far to find connection, creativity, and community spirit. From music and markets to family fun and practical preparedness, the lineup of local events reflects a community that shows up—for each other and for the place we call home.

It’s also a special weekend to recognize and celebrate the mothers and mother figures who help shape our community every day. Whether you’re spending time together at an event, sharing a meal, or simply enjoying the outdoors, Mother’s Day is a chance to say thank you in ways big and small.

For those drawn to the arts, Broadway Comes to Sooke promises an uplifting evening (or afternoon) of familiar tunes and local talent. The Sooke Community Choir, joined by special guests, brings well-loved Broadway songs to life at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (1962 Murray Road), with performances on May 8 at 7:00 PM and May 9 at 2:00 PM. With complimentary treats at intermission and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere, it’s an easy and memorable way to celebrate the weekend.

If your ideal Saturday leans more toward fresh air and local flavour, the Sooke Country Market’s return is worth celebrating. Held every Saturday through October at Woodside Farm, the market brings together local farmers, food producers, artisans, and makers in a scenic, historic setting. It’s also a great opportunity to pick up a thoughtful, locally made gift or treat for Mother’s Day while supporting small businesses and connecting with the people behind the products.

Meanwhile, at the Sooke Flats, a long-standing community favourite returns with a splash. The Sooke Harbourside Lions Duck Day takes place on May 9 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, offering a lively afternoon of duck races, games, and family-friendly activities. With proceeds supporting local youth programs and community services, it’s a feel-good event in every sense.

Not all events this weekend are purely for entertainment—but they are just as important. The Emergency Preparedness Open House, hosted by T’Sou-ke Nation in collaboration with local partners, runs on May 9 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the T’Sou-ke Nation Community Complex & Health Centre. Residents are invited to learn, connect, and build preparedness together—an important part of caring for one another as a community.

And for those staying close to home, seasonal initiatives like yard waste disposal days throughout May offer another way to contribute. As Sooke ramps up wildfire preparedness efforts, these small actions help protect homes, neighbourhoods, and the natural environment we all value.

Across the community, local businesses are also getting into the spirit of the weekend—whether by hosting small events, offering Mother’s Day specials, or welcoming visitors stopping in before or after community activities. It’s a great time to explore local shops, cafés, and services, and to support the businesses that help make Sooke vibrant year-round.

Taken together, this weekend’s events highlight the many ways people can engage with Sooke—through music, food, family fun, learning, and stewardship. Whether you attend one event or several, the invitation is the same: step out, take part, and be part of what makes this community thrive.
