Give sows and cubs space

The District of Sooke is reminding residents and visitors to use caution and give wildlife plenty of space as bears become more active in the community, including sows with cubs.

Sows with cubs may be especially protective if they are surprised, approached, crowded or harassed. If you encounter a bear, remain calm, back away slowly and leave the area. Do not run, approach, follow, chase, yell at or attempt to scare bears away.

Trails and public spaces remain open unless otherwise posted. However, residents and visitors are asked to stay alert, make noise to avoid surprise encounters, and are encouraged to keep dogs leashed and give bears room to move through the area safely.

The District coordinates response and public awareness efforts with local wildlife education providers, such as Wild Wise Society and their community volunteers, as well as the BC Conservation Officer Service.

Community awareness plays an important role in reducing human-wildlife conflict. Residents are also reminded to secure attractants, including garbage, organics, pet food, bird seed, fruit, barbeques and other items that may draw bears into neighbourhoods.
