Sooke comes alive this weekend with music, markets, family fun, and community events. Celebrate Mother’s Day, support local businesses, and connect with neighbours through vibrant activities for all ages.
Sooke marked Community Wildfire Preparedness Day with a stewardship event, FireSmart education, and the launch of a free yard waste program (open Saturdays in May, excluding the long weekend, at the Sooke Parks Yard). Emergency preparedness activities continue throughout the week—residents are encouraged to learn more and attend the May 9 open house at the T’Sou-ke Nation Community Complex & Health Centre.
Flags at the District of Sooke Municipal Hall have been lowered to half-mast in recognition of the passing of Langford Councillor Lillian Szpak and her decades of public service.
T'Sou-ke Nation, in collaboration with local partners including the District of Sooke Emergency Management Program, is hosting an Emergency Preparedness Open House on May 9 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the T'Sou-ke Nation Community Complex & Health Centre, inviting residents to learn, connect, and strengthen community readiness for emergencies.
Emergency Preparedness Week encourages residents to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies. Connect with neighbours, try the PreparedBC scavenger hunt, and sign up for Sooke’s Alert Notification System at sooke.ca/alert.
Through this proclamation, the District of Sooke recognizes May as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of sun safety, the risks of UV exposure, and the role of early detection and public education in reducing skin cancer rates.
