The District of Sooke has launched an online Development Permit Area (DPA) Viewer to support Official Community Plan (OCP) implementation. The tool helps applicants screen properties for applicable DPAs, understand permit requirements, and access guidance before advancing project design and applications.
On February 17, 2026, Sooke Council will begin deliberations on the 2026 municipal budget, starting with a focus on policing. Following earlier community engagement and service reviews, Council will refine the draft Financial Plan and Tax Rate Bylaw ahead of the May 15 adoption deadline.
Blythwood Road will be closed to through traffic on Tuesday, February 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to accommodate surveying work. Alternative access is available via Parkland. Once surveying is complete, the road will reopen to single-lane alternating traffic.
Mayor Maja Tait extends condolences following the February 10, 2026 tragedy in Tumbler Ridge, standing in solidarity with those affected. District of Sooke flags will be lowered to half-mast until sunset, February 17, 2026 in remembrance and respect. An online book of condolences is available for signing until end of day on Friday, February 20.
The District of Sooke advises residents that, as is typical this time of year, bear activity is increasing. Following a year with no bear deaths from human–wildlife conflict, residents are encouraged to secure attractants and support healthy coexistence by preventing bears from becoming habituated to household food waste and other attractants.
Temporary traffic impacts are expected Sunday, March 8, along Edward Milne Road, Sooke River Road, and Sooke Road for the Westcoast Sooke 10K. Increased pedestrian activity and minor delays are expected between approximately 10:00 am and 1:00 pm.
Sooke Region Food CHI has named The Greener Side Farm and farmer Lo Shrum as the second 2025 Farmer Bursary recipient, supporting local food production, sustainable agriculture, and farm infrastructure that strengthens the food system.
Sooke Black Heritage Week activities run February 16–22, 2026 at the Sooke Region Museum, celebrating experiences through food, arts, workshops, and dialogue, fostering connection, understanding, equity, and community across Sooke for all residents and families.
The District of Sooke and 606 Water Group are assessing interest in hosting Streamkeepers training, supporting direction to build Streamkeeper teams. Participants commit 14 hours over two weekends. Expressions of interest close March 1, 2026.
The BC Cancer Foundation Mobile Mammography Service will visit Sooke at the Vancouver Island Regional Library from February 2–6 and May 19–22, offering free breast cancer screening for eligible residents aged 40 and over.
