As 2026 begins, Mayor Tait reflects on gratitude and service, highlights upcoming community projects, budget engagement, and grant-funded improvements, and encourages kindness, participation, and connection as Sooke looks ahead together.
Blythwood Road, west of Woodlands Road (5829–5833), is open to single lane, alternating for local area traffic. Winter rainfall caused embankment sloughing at Saseenos Creek, prompting a geotechnical investigation. Updates will follow.
The District of Sooke hosts a free Winter Yard Waste Day January 10, 2026, inviting residents to drop off yard waste and non-invasive plants, supporting FireSmart practices, seasonal cleanup, and community wildfire risk reduction efforts. Sooke residents can drop off materials between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. at the Sooke Parks Yard, 2070 Kaltasin Road.
Above-average rainfall and possible high winds are forecast. District crews are monitoring conditions. Residents are encouraged to report flooding or hazards, use caution, prepare for potential power outages, and access two 24/7 sandbag stations—including a second location opening by December 19, 2025 at Fire Station 2 (2011 Goodridge Rd), in addition to Ed MacGregor Park parking lot (6752 West Coast Rd)—to support community emergency preparedness.
In 2025, Sooke advanced key projects, completed the OCP, improved mobility, enhanced community spaces, and strengthened regional partnerships. These accomplishments reflect our community’s dedication and collaboration as we continue building a vibrant, connected, and resilient Sooke.
This District of Sooke is providing notice of its 2026 Council meeting schedule. Generally, Regular Council meetings will take place at 6:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Monday of each month, shifting to Tuesday when a statutory holiday falls on the scheduled meeting date. Committee of the Whole meetings are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on the third Monday of each month, unless a holiday requires an alternate date. The District of Sooke welcomes Greg Lowis as Director of Corporate Services, bringing extensive municipal experience, legislative expertise, and a community-focused approach to governance. His leadership will strengthen collaboration, support Council processes, and enhance organizational capacity starting January 7, 2026.
Update, December 11, 2025 12:38pm: Sooke Potholes Gateway and Sooke River Nature Trail are reopen. Original post: Above-average rainfall is causing localized flooding on several Sooke roads. Crews are responding by priority. Residents are urged to use caution near waterways, respect trail closures, and use the Ed MacGregor Park sandbag station if needed.
Together with the community, the Sooke Lions Club raised $1,566.20 for the Sooke Food Bank through Breakfast with Santa and the Santa Parade!
At the December 8, 2025 Regular Council meeting, Sooke Council adopted a new Official Community Plan (OCP), updating the 2010 plan and guiding 20 years of growth, emphasizing compact development, housing needs, environmental stewardship, and clarified waterfront policies.
